UNHCR Innovation marketplace

In 2023, UNHCR Innovation Service reached out to USA for UNHCR and The Hive team to create a better experience of their Innovation Funds. It’s a long-term project where the focus are on ideas refugee-led, that explore the creative and responsible use of data and emerging technology, that test cutting edge uses of digital tools, and that deliver positive results for our climate and environment.



Each year new ideas are selected, and partners and resources matched and researched. A new website was built to better showcase the work by themes and categories, and also incorporate metrics and some storytelling to it.

The app was a collaboration with the UNHCR Innovation team, very collaborative. I worked on a data integration on Github where data could be fed from a Google spreadsheet and be the base of a static website that has all projects listed.

The site is built on top of Jekyll, a site generator simple enough to have dynamic data feeding it. Some light Javascript and D3 was used for the storytelling pieces and the dashboards and data presentations.

Roles

  1. Coding: front-end and interactivity: done with vanilla JS, Flexbox, D3. Jekyll was used as a static site generator, using Github Actions. Some Python code is used, also with Github Actions, to grab the data from a Google Spreadsheet.
  2. Art direction and design.
